I Am a Tooth Nerd.
I have always wanted to understand how things work. Before dentistry, it was computers, cameras and cars – I usually took them apart before I had completely worked out how they were going back together! Dentistry gave that curiosity a purpose. A chance to make a difference.
A tooth is never just a tooth. Its shape affects the bite. The bite affects how forces travel through the teeth, muscles and joints. The position of the jaws helps define the smile and the space available for the tongue and nasal airway. All of those parts work together to make a human, a person. When one part of that person changes, the rest of the system has to respond.
That is why I want to understand the why before deciding on the how. Sometimes the right answer is a very conservative restoration. Sometimes it requires orthodontics, expansion, implants or reconstruction. The scale changes; the planning principles do not. Some people’s system is actually perfect, either it was born that way or maybe it was already molded. Very few systems are perfect, all humans are perfectly imperfect. But when we think about treatment and options, it all has to go back to the way things work together. Why did something break to begin with? Why is there wear on the teeth? Why does someone snore? Why do they grind their teeth? Why are they getting a lot of cavities? Why are the gums inflamed? There is always a why.

Sleep & Airway
The mouth can offer important clues about breathing and sleep. Narrow arches, tooth wear, clenching, tongue position and facial growth patterns may lead us to ask better questions, screen more carefully and coordinate objective testing when appropriate. The mouth is the gateway to the body, and air is the key to life. If we do not respect the airway, the airway (or the body’s response to any airway limitation) will destroy everything.

Digital Planning
Technology is most useful when it improves the plan — not when it is used simply because it is new. Photography, intraoral scanning, CBCT, software design, milling and 3D printing let us study problems before treatment and communicate the plan clearly. Some of this tech has been around forever – photos of teeth, smiles, faces. Other tech, such as 3D scans of the teeth, jaws, and bite — available at your fingertips — have changed the game. With better data, we get better plans. With better plans, we get better results.

The Technology Matters. The Plan Matters More.
Digital dentistry is not one machine or one procedure. It is a connected process: gather better information, combine it into a usable model, design the desired outcome, test the plan and translate it accurately into the mouth.
That process might help us preserve more natural tooth structure, determine whether an implant can support the intended restoration, preview changes to a smile, evaluate a transverse deficiency or fabricate provisional teeth during complex treatment. The technology changes quickly. The responsibility to use it thoughtfully does not.
Cases, People. Not Just Before-and-Afters.
A final photograph shows where a case ended. It rarely explains how we got there—or why a particular treatment was chosen.
The Case Library goes deeper. Each featured case begins with the patient’s concern, documents what we found, explains the reasoning behind the plan and follows the treatment from design through delivery. When long-term records are available, I want to show those too. Dentistry should be judged by more than the photograph taken on delivery day.
Behind the Why.
Some of the smallest procedures contain the most interesting lessons. Behind the Why is where I share clinical cases, digital workflows, unexpected findings and the details that can separate a restoration that merely fills a space from one designed to last.
The subjects range from cracks and conservative restorations to full-arch implants, smile design, airway screening and adult expansion. The common thread is the reasoning behind the treatment.

I practice at Pinewood Dentistry and Implants in Cumming and Sandy Springs, Georgia, where our team provides comprehensive family dentistry alongside advanced restorative, implant, cosmetic and airway-focused care. I also teach, lecture and share digital workflows with other clinicians.
Curiosity Is the Common Thread.
I am an Atlanta native, Georgia Tech graduate and graduate of the Dental College of Georgia. Dentistry brings together the things I have always loved: medicine, engineering, photography, craftsmanship and the challenge of understanding how a complicated system works.
Outside the office, that curiosity usually leads me toward travel, photography, vinyl records (can’t beat old school), snowboarding, or an early 2000’s BMW that has once again decided it needs my attention by leaking oil all over my driveway.
